Comes a Stranger

Sleeping dogs by moonlight,
dreaming -- twitch twitch --
of something with odor of human 
not yet over the hillock.
Nostrils flare first -- sniff sniff
Ears are the next to stand,
eyes open already scanning,
quickly up on legs alert,
pissing to mark territory,
woof woof bark bark
guttural growls, flashing 
canines in canine warning...

Not unfriendly or vicious
just cautious as dogs 
by nature are.
